Mr. Grant's Monthly News

March 2011

As this winter finally starts to dwindle down, I would like to take this time to thank the staff, parents and the students for your patience in making it through this winter.  Even though we still have plenty of winter left, we can begin to see the end is in sight.  Every year we talk about how long the winter was, but this year it truly was long.  We lost one month of fall with the early cold weather and snow that stayed with us for the entire winter.  Making up time is never easy, but it is something we will need to do. We will get information to you as soon as we are able to finalize our plans.

Congratulations to Anthony True for winning the GHEC District Spelling Bee.  This spelling bee was held at the Granada site on January 27th.  Anthony will represent GHEC at the Regional Spelling Bee on Tuesday, February 15th.  Anthony is in the seventh grade.  Good luck to you Anthony.  Congratulations go to Sarah Garry for being the runner-up in this year’s spelling bee.  Sarah is in the eighth grade.  Sarah would represent GHEC if Anthony would be unable to attend.

Congratulations to Tanner Nawrocki for being selected as our sub-section winner for the Triple A award.  Tanner was selected out of 8 other candidates to represent our sub-section.  Tanner then went to Mankato to be interviewed by a panel of 5 to see who would represent our Section as the Triple A winner.  We are very proud of Tanner’s accomplishments.

Mr. Grant's Monthly News

NOVEMBER 2010

We are nearing the end of the first quarter.  Please note we will be having conferences Thursday, November 11th at both sites.  These conferences will run from 3:30 – 8:30 on this first night.  The high school will have another night of conferences on Tuesday, November 16th from 3:30 – 6:30.  The Elementary will have a second night of conferences Thursday, November 18th from 3:30 – 6:30.  Please make every effort to attend.  We want to make sure both home and school are communicating with each other in the most productive way.

November will be a busy month for testing.  We start on Tuesday November 2nd with the MCA Writing re-test for those who have not passed the written test, or upper classmen who have not taken the test.  This is a Grad test and must be passed in order to graduate. Wednesday, November 3rd will be the MCA Reading re-test.  This will be done on-line.  This test is the Grad test and must be passed in order to graduate.  Tuesday, November 9th is the MCA Math re-test.  This test is also taken on-line.  This test must be taken by those students who did not pass the MCA Math test last Spring.  Students not passing the MCA Math test must attempt the test at least two more times, plus have all the other requirements met for the state and the school district in order to graduate.

On Wednesday, November 10th the 10th graders will be taking the Plan test.  This test is similar to the ACT.  The results of this test are used to give students an idea of how they may perform on the ACT.  Mr. Sagedahl will be giving this test to the students.  On Wednesday, November 17th the eighth grade will be taking the Explore test.  This test is also given by Mr. Sagedahl.

Thanksgiving break will be from Wednesday, November 24th through Sunday, November 28th.

As we get closer to the snow season I would like to remind everyone to have a plan in place as to where your child/children will go if we should have an early out or a late start.  On days we dismiss early it is very important for the office to have open lines for calls coming in and being made by school personnel.  We will continue to do the best we can in getting our students home safely.  Please make sure the appropriate dress is maintained during our colder weather.

On November 2nd you will be asked to vote on the GHEC referendum.  This is a very critical time for all school districts.  I am truly amazed how our schools are asked to do so much more with so much less.  Most of our schools have had to reduce staff to maintain a control over our expenses.  I can honestly say GHEC has done a very good job of keeping spending down to where it has to be for us to get by from year to year.  Our staff has been fantastic in making the dollars stretch throughout the last few years.  We are doing this while providing a very well rounded education for our students.  A great deal of this success also goes to our students and parents.  Without your help none of this would be possible.  We truly appreciate the efforts being made by all concerned to make and keep GHEC the center of our communities.

Thanks

Bob
